International Folk Dancing with Roland Forbes

leave a comment »

September 14

Every Friday night since April 1996, a group of dancers have gathered at the Greenbelt Youth Center’s multipurpose room for an international folk dancing class led by Roland Forbes. Lessons are taught from 8 to 9 p.m. and then from 9 to 10 p.m. dancers can request their favorite dances. These photos are from an open house on September 14.

The instructor Roland Forbes writes down dance names and their countries of origin on the white board:

MA NAVU…ISR
MAKEDONIO…MAC
HORA DE LA MUNTE…ROM
PATCH TANZ…ISRAEL
PROMOROACA…ROM
ZEMERATIK…ISR

These dances are from Israel, Macedonia, and Romania.

Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department Crab Feast

with one comment

September 29

The Greenbelt Volunteer Fire Department’s annual crab feast takes place in late September and is the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year. 275 tickets are available and they sell out every year, often several weeks before the event. (So do not show up at the door to buy ticket.) This year tickets are $40 for adults and $20 for children 6 to 12, and the feast is from 2 to 6 p.m. at the fire station on Crescent Road.

The fire station’s parking lot is full and a long line of cars can be seen parked along Crescent Road.

Greenbelt’s First Family

with 3 comments

September 30, October 1

Who was the first family in Greenbelt? Cathy Knepper’s book “Greenbelt, Maryland: A Living Legacy of the New Deal” contains this intriguing sentence on page 209: “At the 1988 Labor Day festival… celebrants also unveiled a plaque marking the first home occupied in Greenbelt, 1G Gardenway, whose residents moved in on September 30, 1937.” On Sunday, September 30, 2012, exactly 75 years after the first residents moved into Greenbelt, I went to 1G Gardenway to check out the plaque.

Golden Age Club Yard Sale and Bake Sale

with one comment

September 29

The Golden Age Club is for Greenbelt seniors ages 60 and over, and the group meets every Wednesday morning from the Community Center. The club’s activities include speakers, birthday lunches, field trips, and, once a year, a yard sale and bake sale at Roosevelt Center. This year’s Golden Age Club yard sale and bake sale took place on a pleasant late September Saturday morning.

Solange Hess (left), who is a member of the Golden Age Club volunteering at the yard sale, shows a plate to a shopper.

Greenbelt Museum Celebrates 25th Anniversary

with one comment

September 27

The Greenbelt Museum opened its doors in October 1987 during the city’s 50th anniversary year. This year, as Greenbelt celebrates its 75th anniversary, the museum has turned 25. On Thursday night, a celebration was held at the Greenbelt Arts Center which featured the Moonshine Cabaret (Comedy! Sideshow! Burlesque!), classic cocktails, and a silent auction.

On the right is Lauren Silberman, treasurer of Friends of the Greenbelt Museum. Tickets are $25 and include one cocktail and hors d’oeuvres. Proceeds from this evening support museum programs.

September 22

As part of Greenbelt’s 75th anniversary celebration, James Roosevelt, grandson of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, visited the city and spoke to a large crowd in the Greenbelt Community Center. The Greenbelt Combined Choir performed before the speech, and a birthday cake and refreshments were served afterward.
