August 17

The Greenbelt Writers Group meets every month on the third Friday evening in the Greenbelt Community Center. The meeting starts at 7:30 p.m. and it includes speakers, open readings, spontaneous writing, critique sessions, and group discussions. Authors, literary agents, teachers, and journalists have all spoken at the meeting.

Carol Griffith, treasurer of Greenbelt Writers Group, introduces tonight’s speaker, her friend and co-worker Edward Belfar. Belfar’s new book Wanderers was published in June, and he will read from it tonight. “His fiction has appeared in Shenandoah, Tampa Review, Confrontation, Natural Bridge, and other publications. His short story ‘Errors’ was chosen as the winning entry in the Sport Literature Association’s 2008 fiction competition.”

August 26

The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) is a Pentecostal Christian denomination based in Nigeria and is led by Enoch Adeboye (General Overseer). In recent years, the church has been expanding rapidly in the United States and is now at many locations in Maryland including Bowie, Silver Spring, and Baltimore. The Greenbelt church is called RCCG Restoration Center, and the group started meeting in 2010 in Eleanor Roosevelt High School. They now meet every Sunday morning at 10 a.m. for worship service in Old Greenbelt Theater followed by fellowship hour at the church’s fellowship hall above the Greenbelt Federal Credit Union. The third Sunday of the month is casual Sunday and when the weather is nice, the group meets outside at Roosevelt Center Mall. These pictures are from an outdoor praise service on August 26.

The podium is set directly in front of the Mother and Child statue.

Labor Day Festival: Booths

leave a comment »

August 31 – September 3

Greenbelt’s Labor Day Festival is unique in that instead of simply renting out booths to the highest bidders, who may have little to do with the town, the food and carnival midway booths are sponsored by local organizations and are often staffed by their members. These organizations can then sell food to raise fund or hand out information to make their activities better known.

Volunteering at the Labor Festival’s information booth on opening night (Friday) are from left Neel Lakshman, Sumit Dalsania, Kevin Pham, and Adekunle Awojinrin. All four are seniors at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and their shift is from 5:30 to 10 p.m.
