Greenbelt Nursery School Fall Potluck Dinner
The Greenbelt Cooperative Nursery School opened its doors at 14 Parkway on April 15, 1942. 31 students were enrolled in morning or afternoon sessions. In 1959, the school moved to the fellowship hall of Greenbelt Community Church and then in 1995 to its present location in the Greenbelt Community Center. 80 students between 2 and 5 from 74 families are currently enrolled. Each year the school organizes a number of social events including two potluck picnics, one in the fall after the school opens and one in the spring at the end of the school year. These photos are from the 2012 fall potluck dinner.
The school is located on the ground level of the Greenbelt Community Center, with a large playground in the front.
There are three classrooms and this is Ocean Room for three and four-year-olds.

Forest Room is for four-year-olds.
Farm Room is for the youngest students at the school, the two and three-year-olds. The farm-themed mural on the wall was just completed by a group of parents before this school year started.
The potluck dinner takes place outside. The building in the distance is the Greenbelt Youth Center.
Some have labeled their food. Here are “curried quinoa w/ mango and cucumber, vegan” and “lemon scones.”

In the center, Lisa Meyer is the school’s director, and on the left Jaky Lilly is the president of the 11-member Board of Directors. Like other co-ops in Greenbelt, the elected Board of Directors sets school policies and day-to-day operations are carried out by members of the school staff. Parents help out in many ways, in the classroom and in school events such as tonight’s potluck dinner.
At this table parents can purchase tickets to a D.C. United game (Greenbelt Nursery School Night on October 20) or a KidStuff coupon book, both are fundraisers for the school.
Just outside the school building is a large oak tree which shades the playground.

Five school staff members. Currently there are 10 staff members including seven teachers, one administrator and two others.
The potluck is from 6:15 to 7:30 p.m. Here Libby Skolnik cleans up.
