Labor Day Festival: Monday Highlights

This is the fourth and last day of Greenbelt’s Labor Day Festival. It started with a parade and ended when the amusement rides were trucked away.

9:46 a.m. Empty chairs by Crescent Road along the parade route

10:07 a.m. Greenbelt’s 2012 Outstanding Citizen John Henry Jones waves in the lead car. Driving the Mini Cooper convertible is Dee Zugby and sitting beside her is Elaine Jones, John Henry’s wife. Greenbelt’s City Council members ride in a restored fire engine behind.

11:01 a.m. Greenbelt Youth Circus

11:10 a.m. The Greenbelt Society for the Preambling Friezes of History as a Foundation for the Future

11:13 a.m. In the Greenbelt News Review contingent, an actor acts as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart who delivered the opinion of the court in a case involving the paper in 1970.

11:53 a.m. After the parade, the Greenbelt Museum serves free lemonade, cookies, and hand-cranked ice cream.

12:18 p.m. At the Greenbelt Museum event, I meet Paul J. Kasko, whose father Paul R. Kasko was a Greenbelt pioneer and took many photos of life in Greenbelt between 1938 and 1964, before he retired to Florida. The older Kasko’s photos can be found in many publications on Greenbelt including “Greenbelt: History of a New Town” and “Images of America: Greenbelt.”

12:32 p.m. Docent Bob Garber shows me a “secret” about the Greenbelt Museum. Before the museum house was purchased in 1986, GHI’s rehabilitation had taken place and the original casement windows had been replaced by double hung windows. The museum was able to put back casement windows for all its windows except for this one in the second floor bedroom.

4:18 p.m. I use these 5 tickets to ride the Ferris wheel again to take a daytime photo of the fairground.

4:22 p.m. The Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Democratic Club’s funnel cake tent

4:29 p.m. Brian York, the festival’s shuttle coordinator, and Brett Fishburne, a volunteer driver, in a shuttle bus

4:46 p.m. The shuttle bus arrives at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, and York finds a puzzling scene of a baby stroller lying by a car.

5:04 p.m. Back at the fairground, this is the last game, a black out game, at St Hugh’s bingo.

5:09 p.m. This lucky woman has just won $152.25.

5:22 p.m. Barbara Simon, coordinator of the festival’s art and photo shows, places unclaimed art works on a table after the shows have closed at 4 p.m.

6:02 p.m. The festival closes at 6 p.m. and here members of Greenbelt Bahai Community take apart their button making booth.

6:29 p.m. Employees of Rosedale Attractions push a Dizzy Dragon toward the center for easier transport.

6:40 p.m. Members of the Greenbelt Police Department take down their booth.

7:13 p.m. Members of the Public Works Department take away light bulbs and electrical wires.

7:17 p.m. A carousel horse is carried into the truck.

9:28 p.m. Goodbye, Greenbelt! Rosedale Attractions will move on to Prince George’s County Fair in Upper Marlboro.
